A Day in the Life of a Mobile Phone Repair Technician

Ever wondered what it's really like to work as a mobile repair technician? Follow along as we shadow a Jupiter Institute graduate.

What does a typical day look like for a mobile phone repair technician? We sat down with Solomon, a graduate of Jupiter Institute’s Mobile Phone Repair program, to find out.

Morning: Diagnostics & Intake

Solomon starts his day at 9:00 AM at a repair shop in Addis Ababa. The first hour is spent checking in new devices — customers bring in phones with cracked screens, battery issues, charging port failures, and software problems.

“The diagnostic process is the most important skill I learned at Jupiter,” Solomon says. “I can now identify the problem within minutes using a multimeter and visual inspection.”

Mid-Morning: Micro-soldering

Between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM, Solomon tackles board-level repairs. This is where the precision micro-soldering skills from his training come into play. He replaces charging ICs, repairs broken traces, and reballs BGA chips under a microscope.

Lunch & Customer Consultations

After a short break, Solomon consults with customers about repair options and pricing. His training included customer communication skills, which help him explain technical issues in plain language.

Afternoon: Software & Firmware

The afternoon is often dedicated to software repairs — flashing firmware, removing FRP locks, and fixing bootloop issues. Solomon uses specialized tools and software that he first encountered during his Jupiter Institute training.

Evening: Learning & Growth

“Technology changes fast,” Solomon explains. “I spend about an hour each evening watching repair videos and reading about new models. The habit of continuous learning was drilled into us at Jupiter.”

Starting His Own Business

Solomon’s ultimate goal is to open his own repair shop. The business skills he learned — pricing, inventory management, and customer relations — were part of the Jupiter curriculum.
